Monotype -
Monotype printmaking is a printmaking process that generally yields one impression from each prepared plate; and are classed as printmaking media. The process involves drawing, painting, mark making on a smooth plate; and passage one or several times through a printing press onto paper. I use oil based inks on copper or acrylic plates; and each resulting Monotype is unique.
The process of creating a Monotype/Monoprint allows me to remain in a state of discovery with the image; at once to both improvise and intentionally explore the print as I work.
My images are built through successive layers of color; and I devote a significant part of my process to creating color mixtures. I use a variety of tools to both apply the ink and to create the images; often working on variations within a theme.
